Description PEPIN CHERNENKO
The Pepin Chernenko apple variety was bred by S.F. Chernenko in the early 20th century by crossing the Lithuanian pepinka with the Snowy Calvill. This variety is distinguished by its good winter hardiness, especially in northern regions, and shows high resistance to scab, making it valuable for agriculture. Trees begin to bear fruit in the 6–7th year and by the 7–8th years provide the first industrial crops, indicating their high productivity.

The fruits of the Pepin Chernenko apple have an oval-conical or round-conical shape with a golden-yellow or creamy color. The flesh is dense, juicy, with a sour-sweet or wine-sweet taste and a thin spicy aroma. Apples ripen in early October, mature in December, and can be stored until June, ensuring a long storage period and the possibility of consumption in winter and spring periods.

The variety has medium frost resistance and high drought resistance, which allows it to be grown in various climatic conditions, including the middle belt and the Central-Black Earth region. The best period for fruit consumption falls on the second decade of September – the second decade of November, however, due to the long storage life, apples retain their qualities significantly longer.
