Description Sulmona
Sulmona Apricot — a late-ripening variety from Romanian breeding, ripening at the beginning of August, approximately from the 1st to the 10th of the month. The tree is vigorous, reaching heights of 3 to 5 meters, characterized by late flowering and high yield, which can reach 15-18 tons per hectare. The variety is self-fertile, but for increased yield, it is recommended to plant several apricot varieties nearby. Sulmona's winter hardiness is above average, and its disease resistance is good, making it a reliable choice for cultivation under various climatic conditions. The fruits of the Sulmona apricot have an oval shape and average weight of 50 to 80 grams; with regular pruning, the fruits may be larger. The skin of the fruits is yellow-orange with a red-carmine blush on the sun-exposed side. The flesh is juicy, yellow-orange, very sweet with a slight acidity, possessing the characteristic pineapple-like flavor and aroma of pineapple apricots. The stone is sweet, which is also a positive feature of the variety. For successful cultivation of Sulmona apricot, it is important to avoid waterlogging in the soil, as the tree does not tolerate it. In case of such problems, it is recommended to dig larger planting holes, install drainage, and plant saplings on hills or elevated areas. The soil in the planting holes should be heterogeneous, with equal parts of clay, sand, and peat, as well as with added fertilizers. Sulmona apricot is suitable for both fresh consumption and processing into juices, compotes, and jams, making it a versatile and popular variety.
