Rots comprise a large group of infectious plant diseases characterized by the softening and disintegration of plant tissues. Pathogens involved are typically fungi (such as Botrytis, Sclerotinia, Fusarium) or bacteria (e.g., Erwinia). These pathogens produce specialized enzymes that degrade the pectin in plant cell walls, leading to the destruction of the plant structure.

This type of disease affects a vast range of crops, including vegetables, cereals, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. The infection can occur at any stage of the life cycle, from seedlings suffering from damping-off to mature fruit decaying in storage facilities. Common symptoms of rot include discoloration (browning or blackening) of tissues, abnormal softening, presence of mycelial growth or fungal spores, and unpleasant odors associated with bacterial decay.

Preventative and control strategies are essential to minimize losses. Key measures include maintaining proper crop rotation, improving soil aeration, using disease-free planting material, and ensuring proper storage conditions (temperature and humidity control). In many cases, integrated pest management (IPM) involving both biological agents and targeted fungicides is the most effective way to manage and mitigate the impact of rot diseases.
