Propagating hawthorn from seeds is a challenging process due to the seed coat's dormancy, which requires prolonged stratification. In industrial nursery settings, seeds must be kept in cool, moist conditions for several months before sowing to mimic natural winter conditions and break dormancy.

Vegetative propagation is generally preferred in commercial cultivation to maintain specific variety characteristics and ensure earlier fruit production. Methods such as grafting or using root suckers allow growers to establish high-yielding plantations much faster than by using seed-grown plants.

When establishing a new plantation, proper spacing is crucial for long-term health. Rows should be spaced at least 2 to 3 meters apart to allow for sufficient sunlight penetration and to accommodate equipment used for mechanical cultivation and maintenance of the orchard.

The yield potential of hawthorn increases as the plantation matures, typically reaching peak productivity between 15 and 20 years of age. Pruning is a vital task that must be performed annually to remove dead or diseased wood and to ensure a balanced, open crown structure.

Fungal diseases like powdery mildew, scab, and rust pose a significant threat to hawthorn plantations. These pathogens thrive in high humidity, so proper spacing and pruning to facilitate air circulation are key preventative measures to keep these diseases under control.

Fire blight is perhaps the most dangerous threat to hawthorn, as it can spread rapidly across related rosaceous species. Orchard managers must monitor trees closely for symptoms such as scorched-looking leaves and blackened stems, and immediately prune out infected tissues.

Insect pests, including aphids and hawthorn leaf-miners, can cause significant damage to the foliage, which reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity. Integrated pest management strategies, combining regular monitoring with selective chemical treatments, are recommended to maintain plant health.

Maintaining high hygiene standards in the orchard is the best way to prevent the buildup of pest populations. Ensuring that trees are adequately fed and watered also strengthens their natural defense mechanisms, making them more resilient against occasional pest attacks.

Harvesting should take place when the berries reach full biological maturity, indicated by the development of a deep, consistent color. Depending on the variety and local climate, this usually occurs during the autumn months when the fruit reaches its peak nutrient content.

Manual harvesting is the most common method to prevent bruising the fruit. Workers carefully pick the berries, ensuring they remain intact for processing. In some cases, specialized machines can be used to shake the fruit onto nets, provided the harvest will be processed immediately.

Post-harvest handling is critical, as hawthorn berries are perishable. They should be transported to processing facilities or drying equipment within 24–48 hours to prevent spoilage and ensure that the bioactive compounds are preserved to the highest possible standard.

Drying is the primary method for long-term storage of hawthorn fruit. Using automated drying chambers with precise temperature control (typically between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius) ensures that the berries dry uniformly without losing their therapeutic properties.

Final product quality depends on the cleanliness of the harvested lot. Removing stems, leaves, and damaged berries before drying is essential for producing high-grade raw material that meets the stringent requirements of the food and pharmaceutical sectors.
