Clethraceae
Clethra (lat. Clethraceae) is a family of flowering plants that consists primarily of shrubs and small trees. Although these plants have limited representation in large-scale industrial agriculture, they hold a significant place in landscape design and ornamental horticulture as valuable nectar-producing and aesthetically appealing crops.

The origin of the family spans tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and Asia, as well as several Pacific island territories. In cultivation, Clethra alnifolia (sweet pepperbush), native to North America, is the most widely recognized species. Its cultivation range is generally restricted to temperate climate zones where the plant can fully achieve its flowering potential in open soil.
Botanically, this crop consists of deciduous or evergreen shrubs characterized by simple alternate leaves. The plant's primary feature is its small, fragrant flowers arranged in dense, spiky racemes that cover the tips of the branches during the flowering season. The plant is known for its relatively slow growth habit and its tendency to form dense, spreading clumps.
Agronomic requirements for this crop are specific: Clethra thrives in moist, acidic, and well-drained soils. It is highly sensitive to substrate drying, necessitating regular irrigation, particularly during hot periods. The ideal planting site is partial shade or diffused light, as harsh direct midday sunlight may suppress the development of the leaf surface.
Economic utility is largely limited to ornamental landscaping and beekeeping. Due to its prolonged flowering period, Clethra serves as an excellent late-summer nectar source. Regarding health, pests such as spider mites are common in low-humidity conditions, while chlorosis frequently occurs if the plants are grown in alkaline soils with an iron deficiency.
