Clubmosses (Lycopodiaceae) belong to the family of vascular, spore-bearing plants within the Lycopodiophyta division. These ancient plants are evolutionary survivors, appearing on Earth long before the dinosaurs. While they are not considered traditional field crops due to their extreme sensitivity and slow life cycle, they are economically significant as a wild-harvested source of natural pharmaceutical materials.

The natural range of Lycopodiaceae is global, spanning from arctic tundra to tropical regions. They thrive primarily in acidic, moist, forest soils where the environment is stable and undisturbed. Cultivating clubmosses is notoriously difficult; their spores require symbiotic fungi to germinate, and the underground development of the prothallium can take several years before a green shoot appears.

Botanically, these plants are defined by dichotomously branching stems covered in small leaves known as microphylls. They do not produce seeds or flowers; instead, they reproduce via spores produced in strobili, which are cone-like structures located at the ends of their branches. Their vegetative growth is typically horizontal, allowing them to form mats or clusters on the forest floor.

The most important commercial product derived from this family is Lycopodium powder, consisting of dry spores. This substance has unique hydrophobic and fluid properties. It is extensively used in pharmacology as a dusting agent for pills, in medicine as a soothing powder for skin irritations, and in industrial applications, such as fine-metal casting, where it prevents molten metal from sticking to molds.

Because they are slow to recover, sustainable harvesting is strictly regulated in many parts of the world to prevent local extinction.
