Vriesea (Vriesea Lindl.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Bromeliaceae family. Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, these plants are predominantly epiphytic, naturally growing on tree trunks and forest canopies.

The plant is defined by its tough, leathery leaves arranged in a rosette that functions as a water reservoir. Its most striking feature is the tall, sword-shaped, or branched inflorescence, which is highly valued in the commercial ornamental plant industry.

Optimal growth requires bright, indirect sunlight to prevent leaf scorching. For professional cultivation, managing light intensity is crucial to maintain the vibrant color of the inflorescence and the health of the foliage.

The temperature range should be maintained between +20°C and +26°C. While Vriesea can tolerate minor fluctuations, sustained exposure to temperatures below +15°C will severely impact growth and potentially cause damage to the root system.

A specialized, well-draining substrate is mandatory, typically composed of orchid bark, peat moss, and perlite. The soil must allow for high aeration, preventing the roots from becoming waterlogged, which is a common cause of failure in bromeliad production.

Scale insects and mealybugs are the primary pests that infest the rosettes of Vriesea. Their feeding weakens the plant and can lead to the transmission of secondary viral or fungal infections.
