The biology of the family includes laying eggs in loose soil, leaf litter, or piles of plant debris. The life cycle depends on climatic conditions; after winter hibernation, lizards emerge in spring to feed and reproduce. High reproductive rates in favorable years can lead to significant concentrations of reptiles on sunny garden beds.

The nature of the damage involves mechanical tissue trauma during foraging or while establishing basking sites. The primary harmful impact is the degradation of the visual quality of produce and the inhibition of seedling growth. Damaged tissues are prone to secondary pathogen colonization, leading to fruit decay and overall reduction in crop yields.

Protection measures are primarily humane and preventive in nature. It is recommended to:

  • Restrict access to beds by installing fine-mesh netting.
  • Promptly remove organic debris and branches that serve as habitats or hiding spots.
