Transmission of the virus primarily occurs through infected seeds, acting as the main source of primary inoculum. Secondary spread within fields is facilitated by various aphid species, most notably Myzus persicae.

The virus has a wide host range beyond lettuce, including numerous weeds that act as long-term reservoirs, ensuring its survival during periods when lettuce is not cultivated.
