Zucchini Chaklun

Field performance of the Chaklun squash

Choosing a squash variety often comes down to balancing early market availability with disease resistance. The "Chaklun" variety, developed by the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of NAAS, has proven itself as a reliable workhorse for many farms. Its bush-type structure significantly simplifies crop management, allowing for higher planting density without compromising airflow, which is essential for maintaining plant health.

Technical specifications and harvest management

• Maturity cycle: Reaches maturity within 35–40 days after germination. This rapid cycle makes it an excellent choice for a relay cropping system, enabling continuous market supply.
• Fruit parameters: Featuring a classic cylindrical shape, fruits measure 18–20 cm in length and weigh between 200–500 grams. This size is ideal for retail demand. The fruits remain stable and do not overgrow quickly, providing the grower with extra time for harvesting if labor or logistics are delayed.
• Disease resistance: A key advantage is its resistance to powdery mildew. This reduces the need for frequent fungicide applications, saving on input costs and ensuring better yield performance even during humid, disease-prone seasons.

Chaklun is well-suited to the soil and climatic conditions of Ukraine. Its robust root system allows for strong adaptation to open-field cultivation. The light green skin maintains a premium look, which is essential for transportability and shelf life. For those prioritizing early output and cost-effective management, this Ukrainian variety offers a balanced performance without unnecessary complications in agricultural maintenance.
