Description NUTANS 642
The spring barley variety NUTANS 642 is the result of selection at the Krasnokutsk Experimental Station and is primarily intended for brewing purposes in the Lower Volga and Middle Volga regions of Russia. This medium-early variety features a two-rowd ear of straw-yellow color, 6-8 cm long, with long, spreading, and serrated awns. The grain is large, with a 1000-grain weight of 47-52 g, featuring a bare base and bristly awn. The plant forms a good bush, possesses high drought resistance, and is adapted to dry steppe conditions, making it competitive among brewing and feed varieties in the cultivation zone. NUTANS 642 demonstrates high and stable yields, reaching up to 5.3 t/ha during trials, which significantly exceeds the indicators of other brewing varieties in the region. The grain is characterized by high protein content (11.3-12.9%) and extractability (78.9%), as well as elevated lysine content (4.76 g/kg), which improves its nutritional and feed qualities. Due to these properties, the variety is widely demanded in the brewing industry and valued for grain quality stability under various climatic conditions. According to botanical and agro-technical characteristics, NUTANS 642 belongs to medium-maturing varieties with a vegetation period of about 67-84 days. The plant is medium-height with an intermediate bush type, cylindrical ear, loose medium density with a waxy coating. The variety exhibits moderate resistance to lodging and susceptibility to certain diseases, such as powdery scab and gray rust. Overall, NUTANS 642 represents a high-yielding and technologically adapted barley variety recommended for cultivation in areas with dry climates and in demand for both brewing and feed industries.
