NUTANS 553

NUTANS 553 is a mid-season spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) variety, distinguished by its high drought resistance and adaptability to various soil and climate conditions. The plant is medium-height with an upright bush, featuring a two-rowed ear of straw-yellow color, 6-8 cm in length, with medium density. The grain is yellow, hulled, of medium size, with a bristle at the base, and the mass of 1000 grains ranges from 38 to 55 g. The variety is characterized by good tillering and resistance to loose smut, but it is susceptible to powdery smut and net blotch.

The NUTANS 553 variety was developed at the Krasnokutskaya Breeding and Experimental Station of the South-Eastern Research Institute of Agriculture (NIISKh) and exhibits high and stable yields, which during trials in various regions of Russia exceeded the indicators of the best standard varieties by 13-20%. The maximum yield reached 5.7 t/ha, which is 0.6 t higher than the best analogs. The grain of this variety differs in its high protein content (about 14.6%) and lysine (4.52 g/kg), which gives it high fodder and food qualities. Thanks to these characteristics, the variety was included in the list of valuable varieties for grain qualities and is widely used in regions approved for production.

NUTANS 553 is well adapted to mechanized harvesting and processing, does not shatter, and demonstrates high competitiveness due to the combination of drought resistance and resistance to the most harmful fungal diseases. The variety is in demand among agricultural producers due to its reliability and grain quality. Studies show that a comprehensive assessment of drought resistance and productivity of the variety allows to fully reveal its genetic potential under stressful weather factors, which makes NUTANS 553 a promising choice for cultivation in areas with limited water supply.
