The Zemlyanin watermelon variety is an early-maturing and large-fruited variety that is distinguished by high yield and excellent taste qualities. The fruits have an elongated-spherical shape and a mass ranging from 4.6 to 6.1 kg, although in some cases the mass can reach up to 14 kg. The watermelon rind is leathery, light green with a pattern of wide, occasionally merging stripes. The flesh is rich crimson or intense pink, granular, tender, juicy, and very sweet, making this variety particularly attractive to lovers of sweet and aromatic watermelons. The plant is powerful with a long main vine, which ensures good development and formation of fruits. The maturation period is from 75 to 85 days after seedlings appear, which allows for obtaining a crop in relatively short periods. Zemlyanin is suitable for growing both in open ground and in closed conditions, making it universal for various climatic zones, including southern regions and the middle belt. For successful growing, sowing seedlings at the end of April followed by planting out at the end of May – early June is recommended, as well as tying plants to a trellis and moderate watering, especially during the fruit ripening period. Special attention during growing is paid to plant formation: all side shoots are removed up to a height of 50 cm, and subsequent ones are pinched out above the 1-3 leaf, which promotes better development of the main vine and increases the size of the fruits. Thanks to its characteristics, the Zemlyanin watermelon is an excellent choice for those who value an early crop of sweet, juicy, and aromatic watermelons with a rich taste and attractive appearance.
