Volzhaniin watermelon is a large-fruited variety of medium ripening period, intended for cultivation in the temperate zone and southern regions. The plant is trailing with a long main tendril and medium thickness of light green rind decorated with dark green prickly stripes. Fruits have a wide-elliptical shape with a smooth surface and a light green background with a net pattern. The watermelon flesh is bright red, sugary, and juicy, with a raspberry tint, which ensures excellent taste qualities and high sugar content. Seeds are oval, brown with speckles.
The variety is characterized by high yield and large fruit size: with good care, feeding, and timely watering, fruits can reach a mass of up to 18 kg. To obtain such large watermelons, it is recommended to regulate the number of fruits on the bush, leaving no more than 3-4 pieces. During a cool and rainy summer, the average fruit mass is 4-6 kg. During the fruit ripening period, watering should be reduced to increase the sweetness of the watermelons. Plants are resistant to drought, low temperatures, and major diseases, which makes the variety easy to care for.
Volzhaniin is suitable for growing in open ground, under film covers, and in greenhouses. Sowing for seedlings is recommended to be done at the end of April, and transplanting seedlings - at the end of May or early June. To form the bush, plants are tied to a trellis, removing side shoots to a height of 50 cm and pinching the subsequent ones above 1-3 leaves. Growing in free culture with spreading is also possible. The planting scheme is 70x150 cm. The variety is valued for its good transportability and shelf life of fruits, which makes it convenient for storage and transport.
