Description Pinot Gris
Pinot Gris, also known as Pinot Grigio, is a technical grape variety originating from vineyards in Burgundy, France. This variety is a clonal variant of Pinot Noir and is distinguished by its pinkish-gray berry coloration with a characteristic light gray sheen, reflected in its name (gris — «gray»). The berries have thin skins, juicy flesh, and can vary in color from dark pink to pale pink and even creamy black. Clusters are typically cylindrical or cylinder-conical in shape, dense, medium-sized, while the berries are small to medium-sized with 2-4 seeds inside. The variety's vegetative period ranges from 130 to 150 days, with a sum of active temperatures of 2600-2800 °C, allowing for harvest in the first half of September.

This grape variety is widely used for producing high-quality table wines, sparkling wine materials, and sparkling wines. Wines made from Pinot Gris are known for their versatility and global popularity, particularly in Italy, the USA, Australia, Chile, South Africa, and New Zealand. The taste and aroma of Pinot Gris wines can vary significantly depending on the region and production style, but typically include notes of pear, apple, stone fruits, sweet spices, and sometimes light smoky or wet wool nuances. Wines from Pinot Gris are often light and refreshing, making them popular both in restaurants and among wine enthusiasts.

The variety exhibits good frost resistance but is sensitive to oidium, so it is recommended to grow it on deep, loose soils to ensure optimal development. Pinot Gris grapes are characterized by high sugar accumulation — up to 25 g/100 ml with acidity of 4.5-7 g/l, which contributes to creating balanced and aromatic wines. For more complex and rich styles, winemakers apply methods such as contact with lees and partial malolactic fermentation, as well as use old oak barrels, which impart additional depth to the wine without excessive oak flavor.
