Tulip Shakespeare

Genetic Resistance and Morphology

The 'Shakespeare' tulip (Tulipa kaufmanniana) is a result of selective breeding focused on early bloom times and high adaptability to pathogen pressure. The cultivar exhibits significant resistance to a spectrum of soil-borne fungal diseases, including Verticillium wilt, Fusarium wilt, and Cladosporium. This trait is essential for reducing fungicide application requirements during open-field cultivation.

Technical Plant Profile

• Classification: Kaufmanniana tulip, characterized by early vegetative development.
• Habit: Low-stature plant, providing mechanical stability against wind and early spring temperature fluctuations.
• Coloration: A vibrant blend of red and salmon petal hues, providing high aesthetic value.
• Lifecycle: Early bloom, securing a competitive market advantage by appearing at the very beginning of the season.

The technical merit of the 'Shakespeare' variety lies in its compact architecture. The short stem length ensures high tissue density, which minimizes lodging during heavy spring rains. Resistance to Verticillium and Fusarium is achieved through the bulb's physiological traits, which act as a barrier against mycelial penetration in varying soil moisture conditions.
