Tulip Caf Noir

Technical Analysis of Queen of Night (Café Noir) Characteristics

The 'Single Late' tulip category represents a deliberate selection process, balancing ornamental value with structural integrity. Queen of Night, commonly referred to as Café Noir, is a specimen where genetic stability meets physical resilience, making it a reliable choice for commercial and professional landscape applications.

Resistance and Biological Resilience

One of the primary challenges with late-season varieties is managing their susceptibility to environmental pathogens. This hybrid displays a robust physiological defense system:

• Fungal Resistance: The cultivar exhibits inherent resistance to downy mildew and powdery mildew, thanks to an optimized cuticle density that inhibits spore germination.
• Pathogen Mitigation: The root architecture and stem composition provide significant resistance to Phomopsis and Phoma, crucial for surviving late-spring moisture fluctuations.

Morphological Advantages

The medium height of the plant acts as a structural stabilizer, reducing the lever effect during high wind conditions and preventing stem lodging. The deep black pigmentation—a result of high anthocyanin concentration—is not merely aesthetic; it serves as a protective mechanism against UV damage, allowing the bloom to retain its intensity throughout the late flowering stage. This late-season performance is a tactical advantage, enabling growers to extend the display window of the bulbous crop cycle effectively.
