Description Leontiy
Leontiy is a winter triticale variety developed by the Institute of Plant Physiology named after V.Ya. Yuryev, NAAN, and registered in 2020. This variety is intended for fodder, feed, and technical purposes and is recommended for cultivation in the Forest Steppe and Polissya regions. Leontiy is a medium-maturing variety with plant height ranging from 140 to 170 cm, characterized by high resistance to lodging (8 points) and winter hardiness (9 points). It also exhibits high resistance to drought, brown, yellow, and stem rust, hard sclerotinia, and powdery mildew, as well as low susceptibility to root rots and fusarium (8-9 points). The grain is oval-shaped, well-filled, with a 1000-grain weight of 42-45 g. The potential grain yield exceeds 9.0 t/ha, and green mass yield reaches up to 60 t/ha. The quality of both grain and green mass is high, with protein content in grain reaching 13.5% and starch content at 68%. The alcohol yield from 1 ton of press cake amounts to 460 liters. The variety is resistant to unfavorable preceding crops and suitable for cultivation on sandy loam and peat soils. The recommended seeding rate is 3.5 million viable seeds per hectare for green feed and 4.5-5.5 million for grain production.

Studies have shown that the efficiency of triticale grain processing depends on moisture content and duration of hulling. Optimal conditions are grain moisture of 13-14% without water-heat treatment, which reduces energy consumption and production costs while increasing efficiency compared to standard technologies. This approach improves kernel yield during hulling and optimizes the grain processing technology.

The Laboratory of Triticale Selection and Genetics, responsible for developing the Leontiy variety, focuses on creating new winter and spring triticale varieties with increased yield, resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses, and improved grain quality. Over its operational period, the laboratory has developed more than 25 varieties, registered in Ukraine, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Additionally, the laboratory provides scientific support to agricultural enterprises and institutions, promoting the adoption of modern varieties and technologies in agricultural production.
