Sweet pea CHOCOLADNITSA

Why Sweet Pea «Shokoladnitsa» Stands Out

In the vast world of Lathyrus odoratus, the «Shokoladnitsa» variety is a distinctive choice for gardeners who prioritize aesthetic depth. Unlike the typical pastel-dominated range of sweet peas, this variety features deep, dark chocolate-toned petals, providing a sophisticated and dramatic flair to any garden design. Developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing, it is a testament to unique selective breeding.

Key Features and Scent

The primary advantage of «Shokoladnitsa» is its intense, classical fragrance. While many modern hybrids have sacrificed scent for color, this variety brings back the powerful, lingering aroma expected from a high-quality sweet pea. Its growth habit is perfectly suited for vertical gardening, making it an excellent candidate for trellises, balcony planters, or small arbors.

Growing Insights

• Lighting Requirements: To fully exhibit its unique pigment, «Shokoladnitsa» requires maximum sunlight exposure. In shaded spots, the depth of color may fade.
• Structural Support: As a climber, it requires firm support from the early stages of development. Providing a sturdy net or trellis is essential for the plant to thrive and display its foliage and blooms correctly.
• Maintenance: The plant is sensitive to drought. Consistent moisture is the secret to prolonged blooming and keeping the foliage lush and healthy throughout the season.

This variety is the optimal choice for those looking to add a touch of vintage elegance to their floral arrangements. It serves as a striking contrast when paired with lighter flowers and transforms a standard vertical garden into a fragrant, visual centerpiece.
