Sunflower Travel

An Early-Maturing Flagship of Ukrainian Breeding

The 'Travel' sunflower hybrid is the V. Ya. Yuryev Institute of Plant Production’s solution to the industry’s demand for stability during short growing seasons. With a maturation period of 80–90 days, it is effectively an ultra-early hybrid, perfect for arid regions or double-cropping systems.

What sets this hybrid apart?

• Advanced Weed Control: Compatibility with imidazolinone herbicides (Euro-Lightning system) allows for effective control of a broad spectrum of weeds and broomrape without relying on complex, expensive tank mixes.
• Biological Defense: The standout feature is its comprehensive resistance. Unlike many classic hybrids, 'Travel' exhibits high tolerance to Phomopsis, a critical advantage in areas with high infection pressure.
• Pest Resistance: Breeding efforts have prioritized resistance to the sunflower moth, reducing the need for costly insecticidal interventions.

Morphology and Yield Potential

The plant reaches a medium height (140–170 cm) with a balanced habit, ensuring efficient mechanical harvesting. Its black, medium-sized, narrow-ovate or spherical-elongated seeds consistently show an oil content between 45% and 50%. Despite the early maturation, the medium-sized head ensures stable seed filling even if summer rainfall is limited.

Why choose the 'Travel' hybrid?

This hybrid is designed for farmers who value predictability. If your fields are in high-risk zones or you utilize intensive crop rotation, 'Travel' serves as a strategic tool for fast turnover. It is not dependent on exceptionally long daylight hours and effectively manages weed pressure through its chemical resistance profile.

Limitations: While the yield potential is lower compared to intensive mid-season hybrids, the 'Travel' compensates for this with its rapid growth cycle. Clearing fields 2–3 weeks early offers a distinct advantage for post-harvest soil preparation and winter crop planting.
