Sunflower 217 A

Bulgarian Breeding for Challenging Fields

The «217 A» sunflower hybrid from the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute is the result of years of breeding research in General Toshevo, aimed at solving the primary challenge of modern farming: weed pressure and yield inconsistency. Unlike many conventional varieties, this hybrid is designed specifically for intensive farming environments.

Technological Advantage

The standout feature of «217 A» is its genetic resistance to Clearfield system herbicides. This provides growers with a robust tool to control weeds—including the most persistent species—without the risk of phytotoxicity to the crop. As a simple hybrid, it offers excellent crop uniformity, which streamlines the harvesting process and significantly reduces seed loss during threshing.

Oil Content Economics

With an oil content of 82% (on a dry matter basis), this hybrid sits firmly in the premium segment for processors. For those focused on producing high-quality sunflower oil with minimal raw material cleaning costs, opting for this Bulgarian genetic profile represents a sound, calculated investment.

Pros and Considerations

• Strengths: Reliable weed control via Clearfield technology, high oil output, and strong performance in intensive cultivation systems.
• Weaknesses: Like all specialized Clearfield hybrids, it requires strict crop rotation practices to prevent herbicide accumulation in the soil.

«217 A» is an optimal choice for farmers managing weed-infested fields who seek high-margin, high-fat content yields without relying on overly complex multi-component herbicide spray programs.
