Olson sugar beet is a high-yielding hybrid developed by KWS and adapted for cultivation in all climatic zones. This variety is characterized by high root crop yields, reaching 80.1 t/ha, and significant sugar output — 17.6 t/ha. The roots have medium size, oval or oval-conical shape with a half-rosette top and root depth of about 85%. The leaf rosette is medium-sized, dark green, and spreading. Olson has medium sugar content and is suitable for early to mid-harvest, with good storability.
The hybrid exhibits high resistance to major sugar beet diseases such as rhizomania, cercospora, root rot, and nematodes. Additionally, the variety shows good tolerance to drought and cold, ensuring stable plant development under adverse conditions. Olson has high initial growth energy, which promotes rapid rooting and development in early vegetative stages.
Olson sugar beet is a warm-loving and heat-tolerant crop, with an optimal temperature for growth and development of 20-22°C; however, photosynthesis proceeds effectively even at temperatures above 40°C. The plant requires adequate moisture, especially during the intensive root growth period in July-August. Thanks to its well-developed root system capable of absorbing water from depths of up to 2.5 meters, the hybrid tolerates drought well. Seeds germinate over a wide temperature range from +4 to 17°C, with emergence time depending on soil temperature. In autumn, the crop can withstand frosts down to -5°C without damage to sugar accumulation.
