Genetic Architecture of the «Darunok» Sorghum Variety

Developed by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute (National Center of Seed Science and Variety Testing), the «Darunok» variety is a specialized solution for farmers aiming for a balanced production of both grain and high-quality silage. Unlike niche hybrids, «Darunok» combines morphological flexibility, enabling efficient redistribution of metabolites between vegetative biomass and generative organs.

Technological Potential of the Yield

• Protein Profile: The grain protein content ranges from 11–12%, positioning the crop as a high-value component for concentrated feed rations. This elevated concentration of nitrogenous compounds is achieved through optimized nitrogen metabolism during the grain-filling stage.
• Grain Morphotypes: The distinct color palette—a blend of white and light-brown grains—reflects a unique composition of phenolic compounds and tannins, which directly affects nutritional value and digestibility in cattle and poultry diets.
• Dual-Purpose Versatility: The plant structure is engineered for both intensive grain harvesting and silage production. The high leaf-to-stem ratio at physiological maturity ensures an ideal fiber-to-starch balance, which is critical for successful fermentation processes in silage storage.

The breeding strategy at the Institute focused on stabilizing yields within Ukraine’s continental climate. Abiotic stress resistance is deeply rooted in the plant's root system architecture, ensuring steady synthesis of organic matter even under soil moisture deficit. By utilizing «Darunok», agricultural enterprises can effectively lower feed costs while minimizing reliance on external protein supplements.
