Description Petrovna
Petrovna is a winter rye variety developed using complex hybrid populations involving the Chulpan variety and the best selection samples. The plants have an intermediate bush type with a height of 92 to 136 cm, a semi-drooping dense ear of medium length, and large grains weighing 27-40 g per 1000 seeds. The variety is characterized by a mid-late maturity period with a vegetative period from 324 to 366 days and high winter hardiness, exceeding that of the Chulpan variety. The yield of the Petrovna variety averages 25.5 ц/га, while in some regions, such as the Kemerovo region, it exceeded the standard Saratovskaya 5 variety by 5.9 ц/га, with the maximum yield in the Chelyabinsk region reaching 62.4 ц/га. The variety is resistant to lodging and possesses drought resistance at the level of the Mininskaya variety, however, it is susceptible to brown rust, snow mold, and powdery mildew, and can be affected by ergot up to 8% under field conditions. The baking qualities of the rye Petrovna are assessed as satisfactory.

In addition, the rye Petrovna is widely used as a cover crop, contributing to increased soil fertility and sanitary soil health. It develops well on various soil types, including acidic and weakly alkaline soils, and effectively suppresses perennial weeds due to rapid growth and strong tillering. Rye is sown densely, using 2-2.5 kg of seeds per 100 sqm, usually after harvesting potatoes and other vegetable crops from late August to mid-September. The rye biomass is incorporated into the soil in autumn or spring, which helps reduce the number of pests such as wireworm and reduces nitrate content in the soil.

Using rye Petrovna in crop rotation improves soil structure and reduces the spread of fungal diseases, particularly potato scab. Thanks to its phytosanitary properties, it is an excellent predecessor for crops such as potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, and pumpkins. Thus, the Petrovna variety combines high yield, resistance to adverse conditions, and important agronomic advantages, making it a valuable choice for agricultural production.
