Developed by experts at the Sumy Horticultural Research Station, the 'Baturynska' rootstock represents a significant achievement in Ukrainian breeding. Registered in 2009, this variety has evolved from experimental trials into a recognized tool for both commercial and amateur horticulture. Its introduction addressed the need for a reliable semi-dwarfing rootstock capable of adapting to the climatic conditions of northern and central Ukraine.

Technical Specifications and Adaptability

'Baturynska' is classified as a clonal apple rootstock that maintains tree growth at approximately 60–70% of that on vigorous rootstocks. This makes it an optimal choice for intensive orchards, where a balance between canopy compactness and yield is essential. Key features of the variety include:

• Winter Hardiness: High resistance to low temperatures allows for successful use in regions with harsh winters.
• Disease Resistance: The variety shows strong resistance to scab and powdery mildew, reducing the need for chemical treatments.
• Root System: Characterized by excellent anchorage, eliminating the need for additional support structures for individual trees.

Morphological Features

According to UPOV data, the plant is characterized by an upright habit and moderate growth vigor. The shoots are of medium thickness, reddish-brown on the sun-exposed side, and possess moderate pubescence. A crucial feature for nursery production is the very early onset of bud break, which facilitates efficient scheduling of nursery operations. The variety propagates well through vertical layering, consistently retaining the traits of the mother plant.

Today, 'Baturynska' holds a firm position among domestic rootstocks, combining time-tested reliability with the technical efficiency required for modern fruit growing.
