In 2024, the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine was updated with a promising development — the AP 1.1 rootstock, created and owned by Ivan Savych Yarmoliuk. This variety addresses the needs of orchardists looking for reliable and predictable material for establishing high-yield plantations.

Adaptability and Zoning

The key advantage of AP 1.1 is its versatility regarding climatic conditions. The variety is officially recommended for cultivation across all major agro-climatic zones of Ukraine: the Steppe, the Forest-Steppe, and Polissya. This broad geographical range confirms the high plasticity of the rootstock, which maintains its biological properties under various temperature regimes and moisture levels.

Biological Features and Morphology

According to the official UPOV description, AP 1.1 is characterized by moderate growth vigor, an essential parameter for controlling the habit of the future tree. The plant exhibits a drooping habit and moderate branching. One-year-old shoots of medium thickness are notable for the absence of anthocyanin coloration at the tip, indicating stable vegetative processes.

The leaf apparatus of the rootstock has several specific traits: long, very narrow, dark green elliptical blades with moderate gloss. An important characteristic is the presence of stipules and the absence of pubescence on the underside of the leaf, which facilitates nursery management.

Practical Application

Using AP 1.1 allows growers to work with material that has passed state certification and meets modern quality standards. The moderate growth vigor, combined with strong shoot branching in late summer, makes this rootstock convenient for budding and crown formation.
