Rootstock IS 2-10

Engineering parameters of the IS 2-10 rootstock

Developed by the Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, IS 2-10 is a specialized breeding solution tailored for intensive orchard management. This dwarfing pear rootstock is designed to perform optimally within the specific soil and climatic conditions of Ukraine, serving as a critical component for high-density planting.

Biological resistance and compatibility

• Immune status: A key technical advantage of this rootstock is its robust resistance to crown gall (Agrobacterium tumefaciens), which significantly reduces nursery losses and prevents tree mortality in commercial orchards.
• Affinity: The physiological compatibility with a wide range of popular pear varieties ensures uniform orchard development. IS 2-10 facilitates efficient nutrient translocation from the root system to the scion, which directly impacts fruit quality and sizing.
• Developmental rate: Trees grafted onto this rootstock typically enter the active fruiting phase within 3–4 years of planting, enabling a faster return on investment compared to traditional vigorous rootstocks.

Practical application in intensive orchards

The dwarfing nature of the rootstock results in a compact canopy, which streamlines orchard maintenance—from pruning to harvest. By limiting tree height while maintaining high yield potential, IS 2-10 allows for increased planting density, which is the cornerstone of economic efficiency in modern pear cultivation.
