Rootstock RULAN 8

Engineering Potential of the RULAN 8 Rootstock

Selecting rootstocks for stone fruit crops requires precise physiological calibration. RULAN 8, developed by the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources, is a semi-dwarfing rootstock optimized for effective control over the growth vigor of grafted cultivars. This technical solution allows orchardists to balance canopy vegetative development with the productivity of generative organs.

Agrotechnical Design Advantages

• Growth Control: The semi-dwarfing characteristic helps suppress excessive scion expansion, which is critical for establishing intensive orchards. This simplifies canopy shaping and reduces pruning costs.
• Genetic Foundation: The work of the originator (Federal Research Center VIR) ensures adaptability to specific soil and climatic conditions typical for cultivation regions in Russia.
• Compatibility: The rootstock's biological architecture ensures stable graft union with most commercial stone fruit varieties, minimizing the risk of rejection during the nursery stage.

Utilizing RULAN 8 in commercial plantings is a strategy for standardizing orchard geometry. The use of this rootstock helps mitigate tree development heterogeneity, which is essential for harvesting automation and the execution of crop protection programs. The technological efficacy of the rootstock is manifested in high survival rates and the ability to rapidly form a resilient root system capable of maintaining optimal water balance under stressful conditions.
