Kharkivska 23

Kharkivska 23 — a winter hard wheat variety, developed by combining morphologically homogeneous lines selected from the hybrid population Kharkivska 23 ja/Leukurum 1963. This variety belongs to the steppe ecological group and is characterized by awned, glabrous, white, prismatic ears of medium length (9–10 cm). The grain is amber-colored, with a 1000-grain weight of 46–52 g, and a grain density of 800–860 g/l. Plant height reaches 80–90 cm; the variety is medium-maturing with high potential yield of 9–12 t/ha.

The biological features of this variety include high winter hardiness, exceeding the average level, as well as high drought tolerance and lodging resistance. Kharkivska 23 exhibits high resistance to various diseases, such as powdery mildew, septoria (8–9 points), rust, and downy mildew (7.5 points), while being moderately susceptible to fusarium. Grain quality is characterized by good pasta and cereal properties, high crude gluten content (32–38 %) and protein content (15.1–17.8 %), which ensures high pasta product ratings — 4.5–5.0 points.

For successful cultivation, the variety should be sown after fallow land, perennial grasses, and peas, with a seeding rate of 5.0 million germinating seeds per hectare. Optimal sowing dates correspond to the beginning of the winter wheat sowing campaign in the cultivation zone. To fully realize the genetic potential of the variety, it is important to consider agronomic practices, including proper application of nitrogen fertilizers during specific growth and development stages. Resource-saving cultivation technologies ensure high grain quality, low input costs, and high profitability.
