Pepper Orangery

Technological Potential of the Orangeri Hybrid

The Orangeri pepper from Rijk Zwaan represents a selection solution for producers focused on a balance between intensive yield and environmental adaptability. The core feature of this hybrid's genetics is plasticity: the crop shows high efficiency both in glass greenhouses and in open field cultivation.

Fruit Morphology and Commercial Specifications

The engineering of the Orangeri fruit is aimed at ensuring consistent commercial output. With a maturity period of 75–80 days, the hybrid develops blocky, cube-shaped fruits with parameters that vary depending on the growing conditions:

• Mass: from 80–100 grams under stress to 200–250 grams under optimal intensive feeding programs.
• Wall thickness: ranges from 4 to 6 mm. This provides a balance between transportability and taste profile, allowing the fruit to maintain turgor during long-distance logistics.

The cube-like shape is a industry standard for the sweet pepper segment, providing ease of calibration and packaging. A moderate wall thickness of 5–6 mm is optimal for the fresh market, as it does not overload the fruit with excessive mass while maintaining a crisp flesh structure.

Practical Application and Agronomy

Rijk Zwaan's selection choice is justified for growers seeking a balance between early maturity and bulk harvesting. Using the hybrid in glass greenhouses allows for climate control to reach the upper mass threshold (up to 250g), while open fields provide stable results within the average range (120–160g). To achieve maximum wall quality, strict adherence to the irrigation schedule during the fruit filling phase is recommended, as this directly impacts tissue density and the uniform development of the blocky shape.
