Pepper Gualda

Field Performance of the "Gualda" Pepper

Selecting the right hybrid is about finding the balance between yield potential and operational convenience. "Gualda" by Hazera is an indeterminate variety that requires consistent management, but it rewards growers with high-quality, heavy-duty fruits that excel in the market.

Technical Specifications and Yield

The standout feature of Gualda is its fruit weight of 200–250 grams combined with a robust 8-9 mm wall thickness. This makes it an ideal "blocky" type for wholesale and retail, as the skin density provides excellent transportability. The uniform four-lobed shape creates a premium look that is easy for packing lines to handle.

• Maturity: A 55–65 day cycle allows for precise production scheduling.
• Resilience: Resistance to Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) significantly lowers crop protection costs and mitigates the risk of total yield loss.
• Color Transition: The shift from green (technical) to a vibrant light yellow (biological maturity) is steady, allowing for efficient harvesting and sorting.

Operational Management

As an indeterminate crop, Gualda requires diligent pruning and staking to keep the canopy open and manageable. Because of the impressive 8-9 mm wall thickness, irrigation management is critical. Sudden moisture fluctuations can lead to fruit cracking, so maintaining steady soil moisture via drip irrigation is essential. The plant exhibits high vegetative vigor; therefore, adjusting nutrient programs to support heavy fruit sets—particularly with potassium during the maturation phase—is key to hitting those 250-gram targets.
