Pear Pirognom

A compact giant for intensive orchards

Developed by the Institute of Horticulture of NAAS, the 'Pirohnom' pear offers a strategic solution for growers working within space constraints but aiming for commercial viability. This variety is defined by its dwarf growth habit, which changes the logic of orchard management. Unlike vigorous varieties that require heavy mechanization, this hybrid allows for high-density planting.

Advantages and practical benefits

• Space Efficiency: The dwarf rootstock ensures a compact canopy, which is essential for small-scale farms and private orchards.
• Industrial Utility: The variety fits perfectly into the intensive orchard model. Its low height simplifies harvesting without the need for heavy machinery, significantly lowering labor costs per unit.
• Storage Potential: The breeding focus was placed on longevity. Under proper temperature control, 'Pirohnom' pears maintain their quality and appearance throughout the winter, allowing producers to target premium market windows.

Limitations and recommendations

Like most dwarf varieties, 'Pirohnom' is demanding regarding soil fertility. Its root system is shallow, making the tree sensitive to drought and nutrient deficiencies. On poor or dry soils, this tree will not reach its full yield potential. This is a variety for agronomists committed to intensive management practices rather than low-maintenance hobby gardening.
