Onion Solnechniy

The 'Solnechniy' Variety: Ukrainian Expertise in Onion Breeding

The 'Solnechniy' onion is a notable achievement of the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the NAAS. Designed specifically for the long-day climate, this variety has established itself as a reliable choice for farmers looking to maximize yield in the salad segment. It combines advanced breeding genetics with a practical approach to agricultural production.

Growth and Physical Characteristics

The variety is highly valued for its impressive speed and scale. With a growing cycle of 90 to 100 days, it allows for efficient land use and quick market turnaround. The most striking feature of 'Solnechniy' is its weight; under favorable conditions, the bulbs reach 500 to 800 grams.

• Type: Long-day bulb onion.
• Bulb Shape: Rounded to ellipsoidal.
• Skin Appearance: Distinctive light-brown husk.

This variety is specifically engineered to thrive during the long hours of daylight typical of the Ukrainian summer, allowing the plant to channel energy effectively into bulb expansion.

Market Positioning and Usage

'Solnechniy' is classified as a salad onion. This categorization defines its culinary profile: it is characterized by a mild, juicy flavor and tender structure, rather than the intense pungency found in storage-heavy varieties. Because of these qualities, it is most effectively used for fresh market consumption and early-season sales. Its sheer size and aesthetic appeal make it a standout product in retail environments, appealing to consumers who prefer large, high-quality bulbs for salads and fresh cooking preparations.
