Onion Staccato F1

Genetic Potential and Field Resistance

Staccato F1, developed by the Dutch breeding house Nickerson Zwaan, is a mid-season bulb onion hybrid designed to balance vegetative vigor with high marketable yield. The 90–100 day maturity period allows for optimized harvest planning, minimizing disease risks late in the season. The primary advantage of this hybrid is its high tolerance to pink root rot (Pyrenochaeta terrestris). In intensive farming systems, where crop rotation may not fully eliminate soil-borne pathogens, this genetic resistance becomes a critical factor in protecting the root system and, consequently, ensuring consistent bulb development.

Bulb Morphology and Storage Logistics

The bulb features a classic rounded shape with dense, bronze-yellow scales. This pigmentation indicates proper maturity and a high dry matter content, which directly correlates with shelf life. A storage window of 3–4 months offers flexibility in distribution, ranging from field-run sales for processing to retail supply throughout the autumn and winter months. The firmness of the outer layers and tight skin attachment provide resistance to mechanical damage during mechanized harvesting.

Practical Application: Processing and Fresh Market

The versatility of Staccato F1 lies in its internal structure. Small necks and optimal scale thickness make it suitable for both fresh market usage (salad type) and industrial processing. The mild pungency profile and consistent bulb geometry simplify automated peeling and slicing processes at processing facilities.
