The onion variety «Northern Spring» is a cold-hardy plant traditionally grown over two years. In the first year, seeds are sown, and small bulbs—sets—are harvested in autumn. In the second year, sets are planted in rows, and large bulbs are harvested by the end of the season. Early seed sowing can yield full-sized bulbs in just one year. The onion tolerates low temperatures well: sharp varieties withstand frosts down to -6 °C, while sweet varieties tolerate -3–4 °C. Seeds begin sprouting at temperatures of 5–7 °C, so planting sets is recommended as early as possible, preferably in the second half of April.
The «Northern Spring» variety is distinguished by its pink color and slightly sweet taste, making it versatile for both fresh consumption and culinary use. Its greens and bulbs are widely used in preparing first and second courses, dried for seasonings, and added to marinades and preserves. Sowing 500 grams of sets allows growing at least 20 kilograms of sweet onions on an area of 4-5 square meters, making this variety economical and high-yielding.
Growing «Northern Spring» onion using sets significantly reduces labor requirements for watering and weeding. When planted in autumn, the first harvest of green onion shoots can be obtained in April, and the bulbs in June. Due to its taste qualities and long storage period, this onion is an excellent choice for any garden or homestead.
