Onion Kamal

Genetic Potential and Growth Characteristics

The 'Kamal' onion from the Israeli breeding company Hazera is a specialized salad-type hybrid engineered for stable, high-yield production with a focus on marketability and shelf life. With a vegetation period of 100–110 days, this mid-to-late season solution allows producers to efficiently manage harvest logistics.

Morphology and Market Appearance

The core value of 'Kamal' lies in its deep, rich pigmentation. The bulbs exhibit a classic globe shape, while the outer scales feature an intense red color that remains stable during transport and storage. The internal scale structure is notably dense, which minimizes damage during harvesting operations.

Storage and Harvesting Technicalities

• Harvesting: This hybrid is intended for manual harvesting. This is critical to preserving the integrity and aesthetic appeal of the outer scales, which are susceptible to mechanical injury in salad-type onions.
• Storage: A key technical advantage of 'Kamal' is its storage capability, ranging from 6 to 7 months. The hybrid's genetics ensure a tight neck closure, which significantly reduces the risk of pathogen development during storage, provided standard temperature protocols are maintained.

Selecting 'Kamal' is an ideal strategy for growers targeting the premium salad onion segment, where bulb appearance (color and uniformity) serves as the primary driver of market competitiveness.
