Onion GORDION

Technological features of the Gordion onion

The Turkish breeding company Bayram Tohum offers the 'Gordion' hybrid, a solution tailored for farmers focused on producing high-quality salad-type onions. As a typical long-day cultivar, it is perfectly adapted for regions with intense summer light, which is crucial for bulb initiation and development.

Morphology and vegetative potential

The core strength of the 'Gordion' lies in its blend of aesthetic appeal and physical resilience. The round bulb shape minimizes waste during mechanical processing and slicing, making it an ideal choice for the fresh produce market and food processing industries. The light-brown outer skin provides sufficient density to protect the delicate white flesh from mechanical damage during harvesting and transport.

Practical cultivation and storage insights

• Photoperiodic adaptation: Being a long-day variety ensures timely vegetation completion and bulb formation, mitigating the risk of bolting when sown within the correct calendar window.
• Storage capacity: A storage life of 3–4 months is the operational standard for salad onions. This provides growers with a strategic 'sales window' during the autumn season, bypassing the need for intensive, high-cost industrial refrigeration.
• Application: With its mild flavor and refined flesh texture, this hybrid is designed for the fresh-market salad segment, where demand for succulent, non-pungent vegetables is consistently high.

Choosing 'Gordion' by Bayram Tohum is an investment in proven Turkish genetics, prioritizing the equilibrium between market-ready appearance and superior internal culinary quality.
