Onion Druzhok

Chives 'Druzhok': The Culinary Perennial

The 'Druzhok' chives variety, developed by Ukrainian breeder Iob Naan, represents a reliable solution for gardeners and farmers aiming for a consistent supply of premium-quality green tops. Unlike common bulb onions, this perennial is cultivated primarily for its slender, tubular leaves that maintain a crisp texture and a delicate, mild flavor throughout the season.

Key Specifications

• Maturation Period: The crop reaches harvest readiness in 100–110 days. Its ability to regrow quickly after harvesting makes it highly productive.
• Usage: Salad-type. The leaves are tender and lack the fibrous, tough quality often found in older perennial onion varieties, making them perfect for fresh salads and garnishes.
• Hardiness: As a perennial crop, it is well-adapted to Ukraine's climate, demonstrating excellent winter hardiness and emerging early in the spring.

Cultivation Insights

The primary strength of 'Druzhok' lies in its longevity; it is a "plant once, harvest for years" crop. This makes it an efficient option for intensive vegetable patches. While generally low-maintenance, the variety requires consistent moisture to ensure the leaves remain tender; prolonged drought can cause the leaves to become woody. For those targeting local markets or seeking a constant source of fresh greens, 'Druzhok' provides a significant competitive advantage due to its early spring availability and vibrant, attractive appearance.
