Onion Olivia

Why Olvia is the choice for the salad onion segment

In the market of red onions, where imported hybrids dominate, the Ukrainian variety "Olvia," developed by the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of NAAS, holds a strong position due to its excellent adaptation to local soil and climatic conditions. Unlike many high-maintenance foreign alternatives, this variety offers consistent yields in domestic fields.

Key features and visual quality

• Shape and color: The onion has an elliptical shape and a rich, deep red skin color. This makes it highly appealing for retail chains, where visual presentation is a critical factor for the consumer.
• Taste profile: Classified as a salad onion, it features a mild, sweet flavor profile without the harsh pungency typical of standard yellow varieties, making it an ideal choice for fresh salads.

Strengths and limitations

The primary advantage of Olvia is its high adaptability. The breeding program of NAAS focuses on predictable ripening, despite temperature fluctuations. However, producers should note that salad varieties generally have a shorter shelf life compared to pungent storage onions. Olvia is intended for seasonal sales and mid-term storage, which is a key factor to consider during harvest planning.

This variety is optimal for farms focusing on fresh produce markets and the HoReCa segment. It allows growers to offer a high-quality domestic product that matches the aesthetic standards of imported varieties while providing competitive advantages in pricing and supply chain logistics.
