Mustard Felicia

Boosting soil health: The 'Felicia' mustard as a cover crop

In the face of soil degradation and rising fertilizer costs, selecting an effective cover crop is crucial for maintaining sustainable yields. Developed by the Prykarpattia Research Station of the NAAS, the 'Felicia' mustard variety is a professional tool for farmers shifting toward regenerative agricultural practices.

Key agrotechnical benefits

• Soil sanitation and pest control. Known for its biological resistance to potato blight (Phytophthora) and wireworms, this variety acts as a natural bio-fumigant. Including 'Felicia' in your crop rotation significantly lowers infection pressure, especially before planting potatoes and vegetable crops.
• Soil structure and nutrient cycling. 'Felicia' is characterized by rapid vegetative growth. When incorporated into the soil, it acts as a green manure, enriching the soil with nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur, while improving aeration and water retention capacity—essential for heavy clay soils.
• Erosion prevention. The dense root system firmly anchors the soil, protecting it from water and wind erosion while suppressing weed germination during the off-season.

Practical application scenarios

The most efficient strategy is to sow 'Felicia' immediately after harvesting winter cereals or early vegetables. Its fast growth rate allows it to cover the soil quickly, preventing weed colonization. For maximum nutrient return, the biomass should be incorporated into the soil at the early flowering stage, when the plant biomass contains the peak concentration of nutrients. Using a disc harrow to integrate the plant matter into the topsoil ensures rapid mineralization, resulting in a nutrient-rich humus layer within just a few weeks of incorporation.
