Evening Primrose is a decorative plant of the Phytolaccaceae family, valued for its bright and fragrant flowers that open in the second half of the day and close in the morning. The shrub has a compact oval shape ranging from 30 to 100 centimeters in height, with vertical stems of a light red shade that may slightly woody over time. The leaves are simple, smooth, petiolate in shape, and arranged opposite each other.
Evening Primrose flowers have a funnel shape with a diameter of 3–4 centimeters, colored in bright pink, lilac, orange, yellow, purple, or multi-colored shades. Buds open after 15:00 and remain open until dawn; on cloudy days, they may remain open throughout the day. After flowering, almost black seed pods with sharp edges form, containing tightly fitting seeds.
The plant is easily grown both in open ground and in a pot. It requires drainage soil of neutral pH (clay or loam), does not tolerate over-wetting and acidic substrates. Watering should be moderate – too wet an environment can lead to root rot, and lack of moisture will also negatively affect growth. Fertilizing is done two or three times during the growing season: in early June, mid-July, and late August; in subsequent feedings, the nitrogen component should be low.
Evening Primrose is a heat-loving plant that does not tolerate cold temperatures. Therefore, seeds are planted after the threat of frost has passed (April–May) at a depth of 1.5–2 cm and in open ground. As a decorative element, it is perfect for flower beds, gardens, and residential plots thanks to prolonged flowering that lasts from July to September.
After the season ends, the roots can be dug up, the stems cut down to 10 cm from the base, dried, and stored in a cool place (4–7 °C). The weight of seeds in the package is usually about 1.5 g, and the net weight is 40 g. Evening Primrose combines ease of care, bright beauty, and pleasant aroma, making it an ideal choice for those who want to add notes of evening magic to their garden.
