Saskia is a synthetic variety of variable alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. nothosubsp. varia) bred for cultivation in the Central, Volga-Vyatsk, and Central Black Earth regions. The plant is characterized by medium height, an erect or semi-erect bush, and green foliage with a central leaflet of medium length and width. The variety differs in its medium maturity period and forms stable swards with good leafiness.
One of the key features of the Saskia variety is its high winter hardiness and resistance to a range of diseases, including bacterial and fusarium wilt, phytophthora root rot, as well as medium resistance to anthracnose. These qualities ensure stable and reliable cultivation of the crop under various climatic conditions, which is particularly important for regions with harsh winters.
Saskia demonstrates high dry matter yield, which varies depending on the region: 57.7 c/ha in the Central, 91.2 c/ha in the Volga-Vyatsk, and 71.7 c/ha in the Central Black Earth region. Due to its high protein content and quality forage characteristics, this variety is widely used for producing feed, which is used both during the growing season and for winter feeding.
