Lettuce Leleka

Technical Specifications of the 'Leleka' Lettuce Variety

The Leleka variety, developed by the Mayak Research Station (NAAS of Ukraine), is engineered to meet the needs of local producers who require a balance between vegetative mass and marketability. As a leaf lettuce variety, its architecture is optimized for the standards of intensive commercial vegetable production.

Biological Potential and Habit

The core technical design of this variety is the formation of a voluminous yet dense leaf rosette. The leaf surface has a distinct texture, which improves resistance to mechanical damage during transport and handling. The weight of the rosette is classified as 'large,' allowing farmers to achieve a high yield of marketable produce per square meter without compromising the quality of individual units.

Agronomic Metrics

• Maturity type: mid-season. This enables staggered planting schedules, helping to mitigate the risks associated with both ultra-early and late-maturing hybrids.
• Rosette morphology: open, which facilitates uniform aeration and light exposure across the leaves, thereby minimizing the risk of fungal infections in the root zone.
• Adaptability: specifically bred for Ukrainian climatic conditions, demonstrating significant plasticity even when temperature fluctuations occur throughout the growing season.

The engineering approach taken by the Mayak breeders has resulted in a reliable tool for the fresh produce market. This variety is aimed at commercial producers who value not only taste profiles but also predictability in harvest cycles and ease of packaging due to the well-balanced rosette mass.
