Lettuce Dunand

Stable Iceberg Harvest: The Working with Dunant

When it comes to intensive production of Iceberg-type lettuce, success depends not only on yield potential but also on crop predictability. The Dunant hybrid from the Dutch breeding company Rijk Zwaan has proven itself as a tool that minimizes field risks.

Phytopathological Resistance as the Basis of Economics

The primary concern for any grower working with Iceberg is Fusarium wilt. Losing marketable acreage in the middle of the season represents more than just lost revenue; it means sunk costs in seeds, fertilizers, and logistics. Dunant wins due to its genetic resistance to Fusarium. In conditions of stress or high soil moisture, where other varieties often fail, this hybrid holds its structure, preventing crop loss.

Agronomic Characteristics and Field Performance

• Plant type: Classic Iceberg, forming a dense, well-structured head.
• Size: Compact, which is highly advantageous for packaging standardization and logistics optimization.
• Yield output: A high percentage of marketable heads per hectare due to uniform maturation.

From a field management perspective, Dunant demonstrates predictable development. It is a workhorse that requires no complex handling. Following a standard nutrient and irrigation protocol, the plant quickly forms a rosette before transitioning to the head-forming phase without unnecessary delays. Given the smaller mass of the head, this variety is ideal for the fresh market segment, where portion-sized produce with an attractive appearance is in high demand.

Summary for Technologists

If your production site has a history of soil-borne fungal issues, switching to Dunant is a logical step. This is not a finicky showcase specimen, but a reliable professional hybrid that ensures clean cuts and minimizes culling during harvest.
