Lavender LITTLE SOPHIE

Breeding Breakthrough: Genetic Architecture

The 'Little Sophie' lavender is the result of extensive breeding by the N.V. Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Unlike wild types, this variety has undergone rigorous selection for climatic adaptability in temperate zones. Its defining feature is a compact habit, achieved through short internodes. This technical parameter allows the bush to maintain a dense, semi-spherical structure without the risk of the center opening up as the plant matures.

Biological Parameters and Physiology

• Foliage Density: High. A dense rosette of leaves retains moisture in the root zone and prevents soil overheating.
• Flower Stalks: Robust, with high resistance to lodging from wind and rain.
• Blooming Period: The variety shows a prolonged flowering cycle, making it a strategic asset for landscape design and aesthetic planning.

Technically, 'Little Sophie' provides a solution for those balancing the aesthetics of a French-style garden with hardiness. Stability of the cultivar's traits is guaranteed by the originator: the plant maintains its structural integrity for years. The root system features high density, which facilitates better transplant success and establishment in open ground.

Practical Agronomic Aspects

To realize the full potential of this variety, soil aeration is critical. Due to its genetically predetermined low stature, the plant requires minimal pruning, though annual trimming is recommended to maintain the perfect “cushion” shape. Beyond its decorative value, 'Little Sophie' offers phytoncidal properties, acting as an effective deterrent for several pests when integrated into mixed garden beds.
