Hippeastrum – a perennial bulbous plant of the amaryllis family, known for its large and bright flowers that crown a tall scape. Its name comes from the Greek words «hippeos» (cavalry) and «astron» (star), emphasizing the majestic appearance of each inflorescence. In nature, hippeastrum is found in Central America, where about 75 species are counted.
Hippeastrum flowers can be red, white, pink, and other shades, but not blue or light blue. The plant usually flowers in winter or spring, however, with proper agronomy, flowering can be achieved at any time of the year. The bulb consists of 12–24 scales and forms inflorescences at different stages of development.
For successful cultivation of hippeastrum, it is necessary to observe the watering, fertilizing, and temperature regime, especially during the rest period and forcing. The plant requires special care to avoid diseases such as stagnosporosis. With proper care, hippeastrum will become an effective decoration of any interior, attracting attention even of those who are not fond of flowers.
