Hippeastrum MIKHAIL SHOLOKHOV

Operational specifics of the Hippeastrum 'Mikhail Sholokhov'

Working with this hybrid, bred by the Federal Research Center for Subtropical Crops, requires an understanding of scale: with a bulb diameter of 22–24 cm, this plant is a true 'heavyweight' in the floral world. This dictates specific planting requirements: you will need a sturdy, heavy ceramic pot with excellent drainage, as the bulky root system demands high-quality aeration. Do not compromise on the substrate; a nutrient-rich, organic-heavy mix with added sand is the key to stable flowering.

Maintenance and Seasonal Care

The 'Mikhail Sholokhov' bloom justifies its status as an exhibition-grade specimen. With a diameter of 22–25 cm, the open flowers create significant windage for the stem; therefore, using decorative stakes during the flowering phase is highly recommended to prevent the peduncle from tipping over.

• Summer period: This hybrid is well-adapted for outdoor cultivation. Planting in the garden from June through August facilitates the accumulation of nutrients in the bulb, which directly influences the intensity of the subsequent flowering cycle.
• Watering and nutrition: The large bulb consumes moisture actively. It is crucial to avoid water stagnation in the leaf axils to prevent fungal infections. Regular application of potassium fertilizers during the active growth phase is essential.
• Dormancy period: In autumn, reducing water and lowering the temperature is a critical maintenance stage. The bulb must undergo dormancy in a dry, cool environment; otherwise, you will not achieve that spectacular flowering in the spring.

'Mikhail Sholokhov' is a plant for those ready for a professional approach. With correct wintering regimes and proper outdoor planting in the summer, this hybrid demonstrates excellent vitality and impressive growth dynamics.
