Varvarovskiy is a technical grape variety bred in 1988 at the Anapa Experimental Station of Viticulture and Winemaking through crossing the varieties 'Phylloxera-resistant Dzheмете' and 'Riesling Rhine'. This interspecific hybrid is intended for the production of high-quality dry and dessert wines. The variety is characterized by a medium ripening period and high frost resistance, withstanding temperatures down to -24°C, making it suitable for cultivation in various climatic conditions of Russia.
Varvarovskiy bushes are vigorous with good shoot maturation. Leaves are of medium size, five-lobed, channeled in shape, and green with a red margin. Bunches are cylinder-conical in shape with medium density, weighing about 230-260 grams. Berries are round, yellow-green, acquiring a light amber hue at full maturity. The pulp is juicy, the juice is colorless, and seeds are of medium size. Sugar content in berries reaches 20.7 g/100 cm³, acidity — 6.4 g/dm³.
The yield of the variety is on average 93-120 c/ha, with 8-12 kg of berries harvested per bush. Varvarovskiy has medium resistance to diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray rot, as well as medium drought resistance. Thanks to its characteristics, the variety is widely used for industrial cultivation and wine production, receiving a high tasting score — 8.7 points for dry wine.
