Baklazhan Khersonskiy — this is an annual herbaceous plant of medium height from 45 to 70 cm with a semi-branching bush. The variety is mid-early, the period from transplanting seedlings to the beginning of fruiting is 65-70 days, and the total vegetation period is 123-130 days. The fruits have a cylindrical shape with a rounded tip, length of 18-20 cm and diameter of 5-7 cm, weight of 180-200 g. The color of the fruits in technical ripeness is dark purple or black-purple, in biological ripeness — brownish-brown. The flesh is creamy-green or white, medium density, which gives the fruits high taste, dietary, and medicinal properties.
This variety of eggplant is heat-tolerant and resistant to diseases, making it reliable for cultivation. The plant is warm- and moisture-loving, so for successful fruiting, it is necessary to maintain air temperature above 15°C, since at lower temperatures pollination stops and fruit set drops. Seedlings are grown by seedling method, sowing seeds at the end of March — beginning of April. The optimal age of seedlings for transplanting into open ground is 50-55 days, and they are transplanted after soil warming to 12-14°C and the threat of frost has passed, according to the scheme 70x25-30 cm. To preserve the root system, it is recommended to grow seedlings in peat pots, since eggplants poorly tolerate transplanting.
To obtain a high yield of Baklazhan Khersonskiy, it requires increased phosphorus feeding, and at the initial growth stages — nitrogen, which promotes timely fruiting. The plant grows well on soils after cucumbers, onions, cabbage, and perennial grasses. Protection measures against diseases and pests are similar to those applied to tomatoes. Due to its universal use, the fruits are suitable both for home cooking and for preservation.
