Chicory Indigo

Professional insights into growing Indigo chicory

Cultivating salad chicory requires precision, and the Dutch breeding expertise of Bejo is evident in the 'Indigo' hybrid. In professional farming operations, this variety is valued for its consistency. The elongated, dense heads provide a uniform shape that simplifies harvesting and packaging, ensuring that your final product meets the high standards required by modern retail and the HoReCa sector.

Growing and maintenance tips

From an operational standpoint, 'Indigo' is a rewarding crop if irrigation is managed correctly. Given its leaf density, maintaining consistent soil moisture via drip irrigation is essential to prevent head cracking during rapid growth phases. The vibrant red leaves with contrasting white bases are a hallmark of this variety, attracting premium prices in the fresh produce market.

Post-harvest performance

For the producer, the real test of a variety is its shelf life. 'Indigo' performs exceptionally well post-harvest. The compact, upright structure of the heads allows for efficient mechanical handling, reducing labor costs during cleaning and sorting. Because it holds its freshness well after cutting, this variety minimizes waste and shrinkage in cold storage, making it a reliable choice for long-distance logistics and shelf-stable distribution.
